As China takes a leap into its future, I am taking a baby step into the 21st century. I now own a digital camera, and I'm not afraid to use it.
I resisted buying one for years because I like my film camera, and being a technophobe, I was certain I wouldn't be able to figure out a digital version. But a point-and-shoot film camera just can't capture some of the glories of the Olympics -- fireworks, dimly lit opening ceremonies, arenas that don't allow flash -- so I decided it was time to upgrade.
Just before I left for Beijing, I bought a camera that is supposedly idiot-proof. It certainly is. I have taken about 150 photos in the first week here. Step 2 was figuring out how to download them to the computer; my former colleague Jay Weiner assured me that Waldo, his dachshund, could do it. Feeling a need to prove myself smarter than a family pet, I tried it, and it was unbelievably easy.
So here are some photos from my growing Olympic portfolio.
