Souhan: Sun and soot don't mix

Last update: August 8, 2008 - 6:57 PM

I woke up today (Saturday here) with what looks like a pink rash on my nose and cheeks.

Wandering around the city yesterday, I noticed the locals holding umbrellas even though there was no sun or rain, just the relentless smog. I even saw a few women wearing black visors the size of welder's masks.

Now I know why: My sunburn looks unnatural and splotchy, like I've been burned by a chemical.

I'm heading out of the city to watch former Gopher Nicole Branagh play beach volleyball later today. I'll be interested to see whether the air is clearer half an hour away, and whether the player's fabulous tans protect them.
