The U.S. Olympic boycott: 1980 Summer Games at Moscow

Reason: After the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, U.S. President Jimmy Carter issued an ultimatum for Soviet withdrawal. The official boycott announcement came on March 21, 1980.

Turnabout: The Soviets led a 14-nation boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles games. The boycott was based on what the Soviets termed "anti-Soviet hysteria being whipped up in the United States.''
