Ryan Dungey races to 3rd Motocross victory of season, Villopoto at Southwick

SOUTHWICK, Mass. — Ryan Dungey raced to his third 450 Class victory of the AMA Lucas Oil Motocross season Saturday in the final Moto-X 338, winning the first moto and finishing second behind Ryan Villopoto in the second.

"It's pretty cool to be the final winner here at Southwick," Dungey said. "I grew up watching this place on TV and now I'm racing here. To be able to share this with the fans is awesome. The day was awesome. We made some progress and (took) some little steps forward (in the championship).

"We could have done a few things better, but Ryan was riding awesome in that second moto. We have to take things from where they're at and I'm pumped to get the win."

Dungey, the Red Bull KTM rider from Belle Plaine, Minn., also won June 1 in Blountville, Tenn., and last week in Mechanicsville, Md. He won the season title last year.

Villopoto was fourth in the first moto and second overall. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider from Poulsbo, Wash., also has three victories in the first six rounds. He leads the standings, 12 points ahead of Dungey.

"The first moto was tough," Villopoto said. "I had to waste a lot of energy to catch back up, but we had a great start in the second moto. I was able to ride really good (early on) and get a gap."

Eli Tomac won the 250 Class event, winning the first moto and finishing second in the second for GEICO Honda. Tomac, from Cortez, Colo., also won this season in Lakewood, Colo.

"Once you start winning motos and overalls that confidence just builds and builds," Tomac said. "It was great to get the overall, but a little disappointing at the same time because of that second moto. I got a good start in the first moto and thought I had my technique figured out, but I got a little squirrely there and got shuffled to the back, so I had to fight. It's really cool to be the last 250 Class winner here at Southwick. This track has always been one I've looked up to and wanted to race at as a little kid."

Points leader Ken Roczen, the Red Bull KTM rider from German, was second overall. He was third in the first moto and won the second. Roczen has a seven-point lead over Tomac.
