Wiggins honored as WNBA's top reserve

Lynx rookie guard Candice Wiggins has been named the WNBA's Sixth Woman of the Year. Wiggins set a league record by averaging 15.7 points as a bench player.

She averaged among the WNBA's top 20 in scoring, assists (3.0 per game), free throw accuracy (81.7 percent) and steals (1.80 per game).

"You see how the game is going," said Wiggins, asked about being a reserve for the first time in her career. "You come in fresh and bring in energy. It's a role you have to embrace."

Big Ten volleyball opener

The Gophers volleyball team will open the Big Ten Conference portion of its schedule by playing host to Northwestern tonight.

The Gophers (10-2), who are ranked No. 12, were picked to finish second in the Big Ten preseason poll. On Saturday, they will host No. 18 Wisconsin. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.

• A Gophers men's hockey alumni no-check scrimmage will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the New Prague Area Community Center. Among the 19 players expected at this first-time event are Nick Checco, Mike Crowley, Larry Olimb and Dan Trebil. A youth open skate at 3:30 p.m. will precede the scrimmage.

• The Gophers women's hockey team will play the first of its two exhibition games at 7:07 tonight against the University of Saskatchewan at Ridder Arena. The Huskies are 2-1 in exhibition play so far. Sunday, the Gophers face the U.S. national team at 2 p.m. at Ridder.

• Concordia College (St. Paul) will induct 10 into its Athletic Hall of Fame tonight. The inductees are Marla (Garbers) Anderson, Louis Carter, Tom Cross, Steve Mudgett, Kelli (Strehlo) Schunk, Mark Sikich, Eric Schutte, Naomi Stohlmann, Dustin Trombley and James Wilson.
