Little League star Mo'ne Davis attends Lynx game

Thirteen-year-old Mo’ne Davis wants to follow in Maya Moore’s footsteps.

A good-sized media circus made its way around the Target Center court Sunday afternoon while members of both the Lynx and Phoenix Mercury tried to warm up for a very big game.

Mo’ne Davis was in town.

Davis, 13, became a sensation when she and her Philadelphia-area team made the Little League World Series. Davis became the first girl to win a game and pitch a shutout in the tournament’s history.

Davis is a big basketball fan. She loves the University of Connecticut, and her favorite player is Lynx star and former Huskies player Maya Moore. Her goal is to play at UConn and then in the WNBA.

Seeing an opportunity, the league flew her and her family to the Twin Cities for the game. She spent the pregame meeting players and coaches. She watched the game while sitting next to WNBA President Laurel Richie.

Through it all, she remained remarkably unflustered.

“I think it’s cool,” Davis said. “I think I’m used to all this attention now, being in Williamsport. There were a lot of cameras. I just want to have fun tonight.”

Sitting on the scorer’s table, Davis talked about being a role model for young girls. She said she hoped more girls will play Little League ball.

Davis spent much of the pregame wearing a UConn shirt. By the time the game began she was wearing a Lynx T-shirt to support her favorite WNBA team.

At the end of what has been a long summer for her, Davis also talked about wanting to get back to school and, perhaps, out of the limelight for a while.

She has certainly grown comfortable being in it, though.

At one point during Davis’ interview, Moore made her way through the group of media to say hello. Davis said she admires both the way Moore plays and the way she carries herself.

“Are you doing well?” Moore asked, while signing Davis’ shirt. “Excited to be here?’’

The two posed for some pictures. And then Moore began to make her way back toward the Lynx bench.

But wait. Davis had something for Moore, too: an autographed copy of the Sports Illustrated with her on the cover.
