Gameday preview: Los Angeles at Lynx

  • Updated: August 11, 2014 - 11:24 PM

A look at Tuesday’s matchup against the Sparks:

7 p.m. vs. Los Angeles • Target Center • NBA TV, 106.1-FM

Lynx update: With the Western Conference title all but mathematically out of reach thanks to Saturday’s two-point loss at Phoenix — a loss that ended the team’s 11-game winning streak — the Lynx’s next two games take on real playoff implications. The Lynx, likely to be the West’s No. 2 seed, will face the third seed in the first round of the playoffs. Right now Los Angeles is just a half-game ahead of San Antonio for the No. 3 spot. And the Lynx play at San Antonio on Friday. Minnesota is 4-0 vs. San Antonio and 3-0 vs. the Sparks. Lynx F Maya Moore had her 12th game with 30 or more points Saturday. She has 753 points with three games to go. She needs 16 points to tie Seimone Augustus for third-most in WNBA history, 67 to tie Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi for second most ever and 107 points to match Taurasi’s all-time total of 860 set in 2006. Augustus is coming off an 18-point effort in Phoenix. The Lynx bench, shortened by coach Cheryl Reeve in Phoenix, totaled just 10 points in that game.

Sparks update: The Sparks are coming off an 82-76 loss at San Antonio Sunday. It was L.A.’s second loss in three games. The Sparks are 4-6 in their last 10 games and are in danger of having their first losing season since 2011. All Star F/C Candace Parker is averaging 19.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, but is coming off a six-point performance vs. San Antonio. F Nneka Ogwumike is averaging 16.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. C Jantel Lavender, inserted into the starting lineup a while back, is averaging 11.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The Sparks are not scoring at the rate they have in the past, standing fifth in the league at 77.9 points per game.
