Lindsey Harding made her debut in a Lynx uniform Monday, joining her teammates for a meet-and-greet at Target Center on the team's media day. The All-America point guard from Duke was all smiles, even when she wasn't looking into the lens of a camera.
"I'm walking into a great situation," Harding said. "At Duke, I learned what it takes to be a great leader, a great point guard. Hopefully that will spill over. There is going to be an adjustment period, but hopefully I can catch on quickly."
Harding just returned from Italy, where she played for Team USA in four games against European opponents. Her teammates included Tamika Catchings, Swin Cash and Katie Smith.
"I was really nervous at first," Harding said, "because it was like, OK, I'm the point guard, I have to tell Tina Thompson, an all-star and Olympic gold medalist, to not shoot the ball.
"It was a case of getting the respect I needed. They basically said, 'You belong here.' They listened to me, which definitely gave me more confidence coming here."
Harding backed up starting point guard Alana Beard -- her former Blue Devils teammate -- the first two games of the trip before taking over at the point the final two games after Beard suffered a shoulder injury.
"Coach [Anne] Donovan told me I did a lot better than they expected," Harding said. "It's a reassurance that I can play here."
Asked what she knew about the Lynx players, Harding mentioned the team's youth, as well as center Nicole Ohlde.
"She's from Kansas State, and I almost went there because of her," Harding said. "I remember coming home [from her trip to Kansas State] and telling my dad they had a really good post player and I wanted to play with her. But, of course, I ended up going to Duke."
Together at last, and the Lynx are happy to proclaim, "Better late than never."
