Los Angeles Sparks forward Tina Thompson scored 23 points Sunday and became the WNBA's career leading scorer.
Thompson surpassed Lisa Leslie, who retired last season after amassing 6,263 points, by making a 16-foot jump shot in the third quarter of a 92-83 loss to the San Antonio Silver Stars.
"Basketball started here in L.A. for me," said Thompson, who attended Southern California. "Anything I'm able to accomplish here is a pretty big deal because it's in front of my family, my friends and the people who supported me."
Thompson is the last of the original WNBA players. The now-defunct Houston Comets selected Thompson from Southern California with the first pick of the 1997 WNBA draft.

Dario Franchitti used a pair of fast pit stops to overtake series road warrior Will Power and win Sunday's Indy Car race at Mid-Ohio in Lexington, Ohio.

"We've got to put pressure on Will," Franchitti said. "The last [three races] we finished on the podium every time, but Will was always a place ahead. That wasn't in our plan."
Helio Castroneves was third, followed by Alex Tagliani and Scott Dixon.
