UMD forward from Burnsville among WCHA honorees

Freshman J.T. Brown of Minnesota Duluth was named the WCHA's offensive player of the week after scoring five points in the Bulldogs' 5-0, 3-0 sweep at Michigan Tech.

Brown is a 5-10, 178-pound right winger from Burnsville with athletic bloodlines. His father Ted was a Vikings running back. J.T. was a 2008 graduate of Rosemount H.S., then played for Waterloo of the USHL for two seasons.

He scored the first goal and had two assists against Tech on Friday, breaking an eight-game pointless streak.

On Saturday, Brown had an assist on the first goal and scored the third. He was a plus-5 in the series and had five shots on net.

He is fourth among WCHA freshmen in scoring with 7 goals and 14 assists in 25 games.

The Gophers play at UMD in the Bulldogs' new Amsoil Arena on Feb. 5-6.

THE BRICK WALL

Senior goalie Scott Gudmandson of Wisconsin earned defensive player of the week honors. He stopped a career-high 37 shots as the Badgers beat Minnesota State 3-2 Friday at the Kohl Center. He made 34 more stop the next night as UW won 2-1.

Gudmandson is a 5-10, 185-pound senior from Sherwood Park, Alberta. He had 16 saves in the third period both nights. The Mavericks were 1-for-9 on power plays.

His 1.76 goals-against average is second in the nation, his .935 save percentage fourth.

TOP ROOKIE

The WCHA rookie of the week is UNO defenseman Michal Young. He had two short-handed goals and two assists as the Mavericks split at North Dakota, winning 8-4, then losing 4-2.

Young is a 6-3, 213-pound freshman from Calgary, Alberta.
