Badgers pick captain and assistant captains

A slightly edited Wisconsin news release:

Senior forward Sean Dolan (St. Louis) is Wisconsin men's hockey team captain this season. Junior defenseman Jake Gardiner (Minnetonka, Minn.) and sophomore forward Craig Smith (Madison, Wis.) will serve as assistant captains for the 2010-11 season.

Wisconsin’s players and coaching staff voted on the captains at the team’s information meeting Thursday at the Kohl Center. Eaves let the team know of the results of the vote on Friday.
 
Dolan had three goals and seven points in 27 games last season. He has 11 goals and 26 points in 102 career games for the Badgers.
 
Gardiner had six goals and 13 points in 41 games during last season. He also was on the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship. He is a  2007 first-round draft pick by the Anaheim Ducks.
 
Gardiner has nine goals and 34 points in 80 career Badger games. Gardiner was named to the 2009 WCHA all-rookie team.
 
Smith returns as the Badgers' leading scorer after posting 33 points on eight goals and 25 assists his freshman season. He was named to the 2010 WCHA all-rookie team,
 
Smith belongs to the Nashville Predators, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. His 25 points in WCHA play last season was the most of any league rookie.
 
Wisconsin opens practices on Oct. 2. The Badgers open the season in Dolan’s hometown of St. Louis against Boston University on Oct. 8 at the Ice Breaker tournament.
