Gameday: Gophers vs. Portland

Last update: November 27, 2009 - 12:24 AM

Preview: Many must have suspected the winner of the Gophers-Butler game would face UCLA in the semifinals of the 76 Classic, but the Bruins got blown away by Portland 74-47 in Thursday's final game in Anaheim. It was Portland's second consecutive victory over a Pacific-10 Conference team, after the Pilots (4-0) beat Oregon 88-81 on Saturday. West Coast Conference coaches picked the Pilots to finish second behind Gonzaga. They returned 12 players and all five starters from last year's team, which went 19-13.

Players to watch: The 22nd-ranked Gophers (4-0) advanced to the semifinals by beating No. 12 Butler 82-73 on Thursday. They did so despite getting only three minutes from freshman Rodney Williams, who started and made a three-pointer for his team's first basket but then picked up two quick fouls. He then picked up another quick foul early in the second half and sat the rest of the way. ... T.J. Campbell was named WCC player of the week after averaging 15.8 points and 8.0 assists in two games. ... Nik Raivio is looking to score his 1,000th career point in this tournament; he has 961 after scoring 13 Thursday.

Numbers: The Gophers' reserves outscored the starters 46-36 Thursday, with Devoe Joseph (14), Colton Iverson (13) and Blake Hoffarber (12) all reaching double digits off the bench. ... Portland ranked second nationally last season at 41.8 percent from three-point range; Jared Stohl was third individually in the nation at 45.6 percent and went 5-for-5 vs. UCLA on Thursday.

Today's other semifinal: Texas A&M will face West Virginia, after the Aggies upset No. 19 Clemson 69-60 and No. 8 West Virginia beat Dan Monson-coached Long Beach State 85-62. B.J. Holmes scored 20 points for the Aggies against Clemson, while the Mountaineers made 12 of 14 three-point attempts against the 49ers.
