The Gophers trailed the entire second half.
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah took a two-point halftime lead and held onto it for the rest of the game, edging the Gophers 60-59 in nonconference women's basketball Tuesday night.
The Utes' Kalee Whipple led the way with 17 points, and she also made two critical free throws with 11 seconds left to give Utah a 60-56 lead. The Gophers' Jackie Voigt then sank a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left, but Whipple grabbed an offensive rebound after missing two free throws to preserve the lead.
The Gophers fell behind early, missing 11 of their first 14 shots, but trailed only 28-26 at halftime. They ended up shooting 32 percent (20 of 62) for the game. Utah held a 46-34 edge in rebounding, including 15 offensive boards.
Taryn Wicijowski had a double-double for Utah (1-1) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Gophers (1-1) were led by Ashley Ellis-Milan with 15 points and nine rebounds. Brittany McCoy and China Antoine also scored in double figures, each with 10 points.
