Gophers runners stand out at regional

The Gophers women's cross-country team won the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday in Springfield, Mo.

Hassan Mead won the men's individual title, leading the Gophers men's team to a fourth-place finish.

Led by Megan Duwell's second-place finish, the women's team finished with a score of 60. Illinois (86) was second and Iowa State (106) was third.

Minnesota's men's team will have to wait until Monday to see if it receives an at-large berth in the NCAA Championships. The NCAA meet is Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

U women earn shootout victory

Anne Schleper and Noora Raty helped the Gophers women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie and a shootout victory Saturday over host Minnesota State Mankato.

With the shootout victory, the Gophers (9-2-1, 7-2-1 WCHA) earned two points in the conference standings.

Schleper scored a power-play goal at 11:31 of the third period to tie the score, and her successful attempt won the shootout 1-0. Raty had 26 saves.

• The Gophers wrestling team won seven individual titles at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D.

• The St. Thomas men and Carleton women won team cross-country titles at the NCAA Division III Central Regional in Grinnell, Iowa. Bethel's Daniel Greeno won the men's race with a time of 12:30.07. Bethel's Marie Borner won the women's race with a time of 21:15.4.

• Thiago Pereira and Olympian Rebecca Soni each won two events and set a meet record on the second night of the Minneapolis Grand Prix swimming event. Soni won the women's 400-yard IM in 4:14.41 and set the meet record in the women's 200 breaststroke in 2:07.68. Pereira set the meet record in the men's 400 IM in 3:43.72 and won the men's 200 breaststroke in 1:56.44.

• John Dierkhising's 19-yard field goal as time expired lifted the St. Paul Pioneers to a 23-21 victory over the Nashville Storm in the championship game of the North America Football League in Miami Beach, Fla., on Saturday. The Pioneers finished their season with a 15-1 record while Nashville fell to 13-1.
