Jones' career high of 143 yards rushing leads Delaware State to 24-21 win over Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jaashawn Jones set career highs with 35 carries and 143 yards rushing to lead Delaware State to a 24-21 victory over Winston-Salem State on Saturday.

Jones also scored on a 6-yard run to help the Hornets (3-6) take a 24-7 halftime lead and hold off the Rams (1-8), whose second-half rally fell short.

Delaware State had only 255 yards of offense, but was able to take advantage of Winston-Salem State's five turnovers. Jerome Strums returned one of the Rams' three fumbles 21 yards for a touchdown for Delaware State's first touchdown and a 10-0 lead with 5:52 left in the first quarter.

Jones scored on a 6-yard run for a 17-7 lead with 14:18 left in the first half and Anthony Glaud added a 1-yard run for a 24-7 lead with 8:26 left before halftime.

Winston-Salem State's Jarrett Dunston threw two second-half touchdown passes.
