Gophers volleyball easily sweeps Indiana at home

Last update: November 7, 2009 - 12:13 AM

The Gophers volleyball team swept Indiana on Friday, winning 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 at the Sports Pavilion.

The Gophers (18-7, 9-4 Big Ten) improved to 9-1 at home.

Minnesota was led by Lauren Gibbemeyer, who had 12 kills and four blocks, and Hailey Cowles, who had 10 kills, 12 digs and two blocks.

Gophers sophomore Jessica Granquist had 13 digs.

Kelsey Hall had eight kills and seven digs for Indiana.

Thunder coach resigns

Minnesota Thunder coach Donny Gramenz resigned last Tuesday because of concerns about the minor league soccer team's financial situation.

Gramenz, a former standout Thunder player, took over as head coach during the 2008 season and guided the team to the playoffs. The Thunder finished 7-13-10 this season while piling up late or unpaid bills with several metro-area businesses.

The troubles were also felt internally. Gramenz's wife, Kate Hopper, said her husband has not received a paycheck in at least 10 weeks.

"This was his dream job," Hopper said. "He didn't want to leave like this, but we have a mortgage and two kids. We couldn't survive this way."

Gramenz is returning to teach in Bloomington.
