Last update: October 21, 2009 - 8:58 AM

Junior outside hitter Brook Dieter has quit the Gophers volleyball team. Dieter was a second-team All-America and first team All-Big Ten player last season. She was averaging almost four kills and 2 1/2 digs per set in 19 matches.

"We'll miss Brook," Gophers coach Mike Hebert said. "She is a great athlete who has contributed in so many ways to our program."

Minnesota (15-5 overall, 6-2 conference) is rated No. 9 in the coaches' national poll and is tied for second place in the Big Ten standings.

Former Hamline standout Hutton dies

Joe Hutton Jr., a small college All-America basketball player at Hamline University who played on the Minneapolis Lakers' 1952 NBA championship team, died Monday of a heart attack at the age of 81.

Hutton Jr. played four years for his father, Joe Hutton Sr., at Hamline. Hutton Jr. played on the Pipers' 1949 NAIB (later NAIA) national championship team and was drafted by the Lakers in the seventh round of the 1950 NBA draft.

Hutton, a 6-1 guard, played two seasons for the Lakers, averaging 2.5 points in 120 games.

After leaving the NBA, Hutton Jr. coached high school basketball at Minneapolis North and Bloomington Lincoln.

Services will be held at St. Edward's Catholic Church located at 9401 Nesbitt Avenue, Bloomington, Minnesota. The viewing is scheduled for Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Friday.
