Women's national team to skate against WCHA all-stars at Xcel

Last update: September 25, 2009 - 12:54 AM

The U.S. women's national hockey team will begin its 10-game Qwest Tour at 7 tonight against the WCHA all-stars at Xcel Energy Center.

Team USA is led by forward Jenny Potter and defenseman Angela Ruggiero, both three-time Olympians, and ex-Gophers star forward Natalie Darwitz, twice an Olympian.

St. Cloud State coach Jeff Giesen is coaching the WCHA team, which includes three Gophers: goalie Alyssa Grogan, defenseman Anne Schleper and forward Emily West.

Badgers are early No. 1

Wisconsin, the defending NCAA champion, is the pick to win the WCHA women's hockey title this season in a coaches' preseason poll.

The Badgers finished with 48 points and six first-place votes. The Gophers, regular-season champion last season, was second in the poll with 43 points and the other two first-place votes, followed by Minnesota Duluth.

Sophomore forward Brooke Ammerman of Wisconsin was the coaches' choice for Player of the Year and another Badger, forward Brianna Decker, was picked to be Rookie of the Year.

Montgomery all-rookie pick

Lynx guard Renee Montgomery was chosen to the WNBA all-rookie team Thursday. The fourth overall pick out of UConn averaged 9.0 points and 2.1 assists per game.

She was joined by DeWanna Bonner of Phoenix, Marissa Coleman of Washington, Angel McCoughtry of Atlanta and Shavonte Zellous of Detroit. The team was picked by league coaches.

The Lynx had a member of the all-rookie team the past four seasons. Montgomery joins Seimone Augustus ('06); Lindsey Harding ('07); and Nicky Anosike and Candice Wiggins ('08).

U soccer beats Hawkeyes

Molly Rouse's goal at the 83:43 mark broke a scoreless tie and gave the Gophers soccer team a 1-0 victory over Iowa in the Big Ten opener for both teams at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The goal was Rouse's third of the season and her first game-winner.

Cat Parkhill recorded the shutout for the Gophers, who outshot the Hawkeyes 17-8.

The Gophers are on the road for their next two matches, Sunday at Illinois and Thursday at Wisconsin.
