The No. 6 Gophers wrestling team will meet No. 3 Oklahoma State at 5 p.m. Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla.

Minnesota (2-0) defeated No. 16 South Dakota State 20-12 on Friday in Brookings, S.D. Tommy Thorn got one of the biggest wins for the Gophers at 141 pounds, a 13-4 major decision.

"Thorn looked great," Gophers coach Brandon Eggum said. "He has a great match coming on Sunday, so it was nice to see him come out and perform at such a high level."

There will be as many as four matches between ranked opponents in Stillwater. The ranked Gophers who won against the Jackrabbits were No. 5 Ethan Lizak at 125 — he got a major decision, too — No. 8 Thorn and No. 10 Nick Wanzek at 165. No. 6 Mitch McKee lost to No. 1 Seth Gross of SDSU 9-4 at 133; also losing was No. 10 Jake Short at 157.

The Cowboys (1-0) were third in the NCAA tournament last season and had a 14-1 dual meet record. They are led by two-time national champion Dean Heil, a senior at 141 ranked No. 1.

Five other returning All-America wrestlers (top eight at NCAA meet) are Nick Piccininni at 125, Kaid Brock at 133, Joe Smith at 157, Chandler Rogers at 165 and Preston Weigel at 197.

Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with the Gophers 24-14, with a 9-6 edge in Stillwater. The Cowboys won 34-3 in Minneapolis last season.

With a win against the Gophers, Oklahoma State coach John Smith would become the eighth Division I coach to reach 400 career wins in dual meets.

U runners 19th

The Gophers finished 19th in the NCAA women's cross-country championships in Louisville. Their top runners were the Hasz twins, Bethany in 50th and Megan in 53rd among team runners. They were 70th and 74th overall.

"We put our noses in there and were in 12th at the 2K. The team did everything I asked them to do, which was stick their noses in there," Gophers coach Sarah Hopkins said. "We had three up in the top 60 to start. … We just kind of got in a little over our head. I'll have to go back to the drawing board and try to figure out why, but I was really, really proud of the battle."

The Gophers had 488 points; New Mexico won the team title with 90.
