The Gophers soccer team recorded its first overtime victory in two years Sunday, defeating Providence 1-0 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on senior Maddie Gaffney's goal with 26 seconds left in the second overtime.

Gaffney's winning shot came after the Friars made a save on a free kick.

It was the third overtime match this season for the Gophers, whose last overtime victory came on Sept. 4, 2015, against Marquette.

"Hopefully this one goes a long way to showing our kids that it really isn't over until it is over. All it takes is that one extra effort," coach Stefanie Golan said.

Minnesota outshot Providence 22-5, including nine shots on goal.
