The Gustavus Adolphus men's tennis team lost 5-1 to top-ranked Middlebury on Monday night in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Chase Johnson and Tommy Entwistle claimed the sole victory for Gustavus (26-9), winning 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. The Gusties were playing in the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.

The Gusties' Mohanad Alhouni and Patrick Whaling will compete in the singles and doubles competition of the NCAA championships Thursday through Saturday in Chattanooga. Alhouni wil play in the 32-man singles draw, and team with Whaling in the 16-team doubles draw.

Saints rout Canaries

A 5-for-6 game by Breland Almadova and three hits each by Brady Shoemaker and Nate Hanson led the Saints to a 12-5 rout of the host Sioux Falls Canaries in the opener of a three-game series.

Shoemaker had a two-run homer in a four-run fifth. Benji Waite got the victory despite allowing five runs, nine hits and seven walks in six innings.

• Andy Jacobson and Danny Anderson eamed for back-to-back rounds of 64 and won the Minnesota Public Golf Association Four-Ball Championship by three shots over Sammy Schmitz and Will Hickey on Sunday at Rum River Hills Golf Club. It was the second MPGA Four-Ball title for Jacobson, who teamed with Aaron Barber to win the 2014 championship. It is the first state victory for Anderson.
