Forward Tyler Sheehy will be the captain for the Gophers men's hockey team next season, while Leon Bristedt, Mike Szmatula and Ryan Lindgren will serve as alternate captains, the team announced Monday.

The four will take over for captain Justin Kloos and alternates Jake Bischoff and Connor Reilly, all seniors on this season's team.

Sheehy is coming off a sophomore season in which he received first-team All-America, Big Ten Player of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten honors while also becoming the 15th Gophers player to be chosen as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

The Burnsville native led the Gophers with 53 points (20 points, 33 assists), good for eighth in the nation and the most points by a Gophers player since 2005-06.

Eriksson Ek on Sweden roster for worlds

Wild forward Joel Eriksson Ek will play for Sweden at the 2017 IIHF world championship next month in Cologne, Germany.

The 2015 first-round pick had three goals and four assists in 15 games for the Wild this season, and he went without a point in three games in the first-round playoff series loss to St. Louis.

Eriksson Ek, 20, captained Sweden to this year's IIHF world junior championship, when he had nine points in seven games. The Swedes lost the bronze medal game to Russia 2-1.

U sweeps softball awards

The Gophers swept the Big Ten's weekly softball awards, led by outfielder Maddie Houlihan (.526 average, two homers, eight RBI), who was chosen player of the week for the first time in her career.

Sara Groenewegen, chosen pitcher of the week for the fourth time, posted two shutouts among her three victories and struck out 35 in 25 scoreless innings.

Catcher Kendyl Lindaman, a six-time selection as freshman of the week, batted .417 with her 15th homer, four RBI and seven walks, including a school-record five in a victory over Wisconsin.

• Groenewegen was selected as the No. 2 overall pick by Akron in the National Pro Fastpitch college draft.
