Iowa City – Megan Gustafson scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter and registered her 10th double-double of the season before the period ended as Iowa defeated the Gophers 80-65 in a women's basketball game on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Gophers (11-9, 2-5 Big Ten) remained winless on the road in league play. They led by as many as seven points in the first half and by one, 36-35, at halftime before the Hawkeyes took charge.

The Hawkeyes (13-7, 4-3) grabbed the lead for good when Gustafson converted a conventional three-point play that put Iowa ahead 43-41 early in the third quarter. The lead stretched to 18 at one point in the fourth quarter.

Iowa shot 48.4 percent from the field for the game and 51.6 percent in the second half. The Gophers shot 29.4 percent in the second half.

Gustafson was 8-for-13 from the field and pulled down 12 rebounds. Ally Disterhoft scored 17 points, freshman Kathleen Doyle had 11 (10 in the first half), and sophomore Tania Davis added 10.

Freshman Gadiva Hubbard led the Gophers with 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting, and Carlie Wagner had 16. Kenisha Bell added 11 points and Whitney Tinjum 10. Jessie Edwards had 14 rebounds.

The Hawkeyes had 24 assists on 31 made field goals, led by Davis with eight, Doyle with five and Disterhoft with four.

Iowa committed a season-low 11 turnovers.

"I love the high assists, that shows great teamwork," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. "That's a fun style to play, and our players enjoy that."

The Hawkeyes outscored the Gophers 38-18 in the paint, 11-2 on second-chance points and 10-2 on the fast break.

This was the only meeting of the season between the teams.
