The No. 13 Gophers soccer team tied Northwestern 0-0 on Saturday night in Big Ten women's soccer at Martin Stadium in Evanston, Ill.

The result left the teams tied for first place in the conference race with Penn State, which lost 3-1 at Michigan State. All are 6-1-3.

The Gophers, 12-3-3 overall, had a 16-11 edge in shots on goal, but shots on net were equal at four apiece. Josee Stiever had Minnesota's best chance in the closing minutes, hitting a pipe in the 88th minute.

It was Senior Night for No. 23 Northwestern, now 13-1-3.

U's Spec advances

Matic Spec of the Gophers defeated Lucas Gerch of Oklahoma State 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday in the round of 16 at the ITA Central Region Tennis Championships in Stillwater, Okla.

The junior from Maribor, Slovenia, and team MVP last season will play in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

The Gophers also won six singles matches in consolation play, but their last doubles team was eliminated.

UMD runner wins

Emi Trost of Minnesota Duluth edged defending conference and NCAA Division II champion Lexie Zeis of Mary by three seconds to win the NSIC women's cross-country individual title at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mary won its first team title with 33 points by placing four runners in the top eight. UMD was next with 47.

Trost's time in the 6K race was 19:51.37.

Augustana won its eighth straight men's title with 28 points after placing five runners in the top nine. The Vikings' Glen Ellingson won his second individual title, covering the 8K course in 24:10.96. MSU Moorhead's Cody Christ (24:22.52) was second for the runner-up Dragons (47).

• The No. 3 Gophers volleyball team will play No. 1 Nebraska (17-1, 8-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday in Lincoln (BTN). The Cornhuskers are the defending NCAA champions and beat No. 4 Wisconsin 3-0 on Friday. Minnesota (15-3, 7-2) is coming off a comeback 3-2 win at Iowa.
