The Gophers received big news Saturday before the spring game, when highly coveted recruit Blaise Andries committed to Minnesota.

Andries, a 6-6, 290-pound offensive lineman from Marshall, Minn., had reported offers from Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oregon, TCU, Nebraska, Missouri, Penn State, Arkansas and Florida, among others.

"All these other programs have great players and stuff," Andries said. "But Minnesota — I could see myself being here on a daily basis and playing here."

Andries is the Gophers' first commitment for the Class of 2017. He said he's "100 percent sure" that he's finished with the recruiting process.

Injury updates

Coach Tracy Claeys was pleased to finish spring camp with no significant injuries. He did say wide receiver Rashad Still "has got a knee issue that we've gotta deal with" and tight end Brandon Lingen "has a shoulder [injury] that we've gotta address."

Linebacker Cody Poock missed the spring game with a hand or wrist injury. Wide receiver Hunter Register and defensive end Gaelin Elmore appeared to suffer ankle injuries Saturday.

Change at kicker?

Ryan Santoso made 17 of 21 field goal attempts and all 31 extra points last year, but with Peter Mortell graduated, Santoso could be moving to punter.

Sophomore Emmit Carpenter made all four field goal kicks Saturday — from 26, 31, 23 and 40 yards. The Gophers didn't do any punts, but Santoso easily has the strongest leg on the team.

"I was really pleased with [Carpenter]," Claeys said. "It may get into a thing where Ryan does the longer [field goals] and punts, and Emmit does [shorter field goals]. We'll have the rest of fall camp to get that figured out."

Dungy visits

Tony Dungy, the Hall of Fame NFL coach and former Gophers quarterback, was in town for speaking engagements and addressed the team before the spring game. "I think it's great for the kids," Claeys said. "He was talking to them about being good people, making good choices. "
