Apple Valley senior Mark Hall is among five wrestlers with Minnesota ties who earned spots at this week's Olympic trials by winning at the Last Chance Olympic Trials Qualifier in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Hall, a six-time state high school champ, won the 74-kilogram class in the men's freestyle competition Saturday.

Four Greco-Roman wrestlers who train with the Minnesota Storm also won their weight classes to make the trials: Justin LaValle (59kg), Hayden Zillmer (85kg), Donny Longendyke (130kg) and Alec Ortiz (75kg).

The Olympic trials will be held Saturday and Sunday in Iowa City, with winners in six men's freestyle, six women's freestyle and six Greco-Roman weight classes earning places on the U.S. team for the Rio Olympics.

U baseball salvages split

The Gophers won two of three in their weekend baseball series with Iowa, after each team took a 6-3 victory in a doubleheader Sunday at Siebert Field.

After the Hawkeyes (11-14, 3-3 Big Ten) built a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning on the way to a Game 1 victory, the Gophers (15-10, 2-1) struck early in the second game, hitting three home runs in a four-run first inning. Matt Fiedler started the rally with a two-run blast — his second two-run homer of the day. Austin Athmann followed with a long home run, and one out later Connor Schaefbauer connected, the first of his two home runs in the game.

Fielder had five hits and five RBI in the doubleheader. Toby Anderson got the victory in the finale.

Gophers, Wildcats split

The Gophers split a softball doubleheader at Northwestern, winning 8-4 before a 10-2 loss in the nightcap ended a seven-game winning streak. The Gophers (24-10, 5-1 Big Ten) hit seven homers on the weekend.

The Gophers men's golf team placed seventh at the 13-team Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., with a team score of 14-over 866, its best of the spring season.
