Gophers' Marvin is named WCHA player of week again

The WCHA named Gophers women's hockey player Gigi Marvin its offensive player of the week for her eight-point performance against Niagara last weekend. It is Marvin's third honor of the year and the Gophers' eighth weekly conference award this season.

Marvin, a senior co-captain, set a career-high mark in the Gophers' two-game non-conference road sweep against Niagara last weekend. Last Saturday, Marvin scored two goals and assisted on four others for six points in Minnesota's 8-0 victory. Marvin's previous best game came in 2005 when she had five points in a victory against Ohio State.

On Sunday, Marvin set up two power-play goals as the Gophers ralled for a 5-3 victory and the series sweep. In all, Marvin fired off eight shots in the series.

Mavs hockey coach reassigned

Minnesota State University Mankato athletic officials announced that head women's hockey coach Jeff Vizenor has assumed other administrative responsibilities within the department, effective immediately, and will continue in that assignment for the remainder of his contract, which expires June 30, 2009. The reassignment was initiated by Vizenor and approved by Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman and other university administrative officials this week.

The Mavericks, who currently stand 6-10-2 overall and 3-9-2-1 in WCHA games, travel to Bemidji State University this weekend for two games Friday and Saturday. The team will be coached this weekend by assistant coach Paul Willett, while the team's other assistant coach, Mandy Krause-Rideout, is recruiting overseas and is expected to return to the team early next week.

A full-time interim coach, who will head the program for the remainder of the season, is expected to be announced before the Mavericks begin a three-weekend WCHA homestand beginning with the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 16.

A search for a new, permanent head coach will begin later this spring according to University officials.

U's Young wins platform diving

The Gophers Cole Young won the men's platform diving with a six-dive score of 318.30 on the first day of a two-day meet against Wyoming at the University Aquatic Center. Wyoming's Mark Murdock was second (264.98), the the Gophers' Alex Stern was third (252.23).

Wyoming's Emily Huth won the women's platform event with a five-dive score of 219.90. Minnesota's Taylor Enerson was second with a score of 204.98 and Wyoming's Stephanie Ortiz finished third with a score of 194.25.
