Lucia, doctor make appearance: 'We really don't have a diagnosis'

Star Tribune

Gophers hockey coach Don Lucia, right, watched the game from the press box with athletic director Joel Maturi.

Don Lucia says he doesn't know what his medical problem is, but he won't coach next weekend's series.

Gophers men's hockey coach Don Lucia, who has been at Mariucci Arena only briefly this past week because of health issues, said Saturday that he will miss the team's series next weekend at North Dakota.

He has one final important medical test, and it conflicts with him being in Grand Forks. "There are still three, four things it could be," Lucia said, referring to his illness, "but right now we just don't know. I have one more test scheduled for next Friday. That is the earliest they could do it."

Lucia, 50, looked a little fatigued but joked with media members between the first and second periods of the Gophers' game last night. He assured them he did not have fourth-stage brain cancer or Bell's palsy, trying to quash two rumors he has heard.

"I started feeling a little bit under the weather last weekend," Lucia said. "Since last Saturday I have had numerous tests over the past week. That is why I have not been at practice. Some of the medications I am on, right now I have not been able to feel comfortable enough to be out there. And, because of the timing of some of the tests, I could not make it."

Lucia did not take any questions.

Dr. Rob LaPrade, the Gophers team physician, followed Lucia to the center of a makeshift interview area in the Mariucci weight room.

"Coach Lucia has the best of care right now," Dr LaPrade said. "The other thing is, we really don't have a diagnosis. So all the speculation out there so far, all of it is wrong."

Lucia spoke to his players briefly just before meeting with the media. Then he went up to the press box to watch the second period.
