Preview: The Gophers committed 22 turnovers but shot well (51.8 percent) and got an unexpected 22 points from reserve Kiara Buford in beating American University 79-62 in the first round of the Subway Classic. Minnesota (3-1) also outrebounded the Eagles 43-30. Yale beat North Carolina State 65-61 to advance to the title game. The Bulldogs (2-1) are coached by Chris Gobrecht. Her career record is 451-370 in 29 seasons.
Players to watch: Buford, a freshman guard, is beginning to emerge. Then, of course, there is Minnesota's dynamic backcourt. Emily Fox is a bundle of energy. She scores, dives for balls and can get up and down the floor. Brittany McCoy had 12 assists Saturday. That's great, but seven turnovers is not so good. Yale's team is built around forward Melissa Colborne, an all-Ivy League pick last season, and Mady Gobrecht, the coach's daughter. Colborne had 19 points and 10 rebounds Saturday; Gobrecht had just six points and five rebounds after coming in averaging 11 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Jamie Van Horne made five three-pointers against the Wolfpack.
Numbers: This is the first meeting between Minnesota and Yale. The Bulldogs know how to pass the ball; five players had either three or two assists Saturday. The Gophers have won their own tournament seven of the last eight years.
