Monique Lamoureux scored a shorthanded goal, Brittany Francis scored on a power play and the second-ranked Gophers women's hockey team won its fifth consecutive game, beating Minnesota State Mankato 2-1 on Friday night at Ridder Arena.
The Gophers have given up a total of four goals during their winning streak.
Alli Altmann stopped 33 of 35 shots for the Mavericks, who were outshot by the Gophers 34-15. Alyssa Grogan made 14 saves for the Gophers (10-2-1, 9-1-1 WCHA).
Francis scored with 6 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the second period to break a scoreless tie. It was the only goal of the period even though the Gophers had a 17-4 advantage in shots. Minnesota State (6-6-1, 3-5-1) had a two-man advantage for 1:43 of the period but couldn't score.
Lamoureux's goal, her eighth of the season, came midway through the third period and extended the Gophers' lead to 2-0. The Mavericks cut the deficit with 4:13 remaining on a power-play goal by Holly Snyder.
The Mavericks had another power play in the final two minutes and pulled Altmann for a sixth skater with 28 seconds remaining but couldn't force overtime. The Mavericks were 1-for-8 on the power play in addition to giving up the shorthanded goal.
