For the first time in its history, Ball State is a perfect 10.
Nate Davis threw for a touchdown and ran for another in a quick-strike offense, and the 14th-ranked Cardinals stayed unbeaten by wearing down the Miami RedHawks for a 31-16 victory Tuesday night in Oxford, Ohio.
Ball State (10-0, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) tied its school record for victories set in 1978 in a 10-1 finish. Miami fell to 2-8 overall, 1-5 Mid-American.
“We’re not trying to make history or anything like that,” Ball State linebacker Bryant Haines said. “We’re just focused on a conference championship.”
Ball State’s McQuale Lewis had two 1-yard touchdowns in the second half and finished with 165 yards, one shy of his career high. He caught two passes for 51 yards.
The RedHawks held the Cardinals scoreless in the first quarter for only the second time this season and took a 3-0 lead on Nathan Parseghian’s 39-yard field goal.
Two minutes later, the Cardinals went ahead to stay on Davis’ 17-yard touchdown pass to Darius Hill.
Weis to call plays
Amid growing fan discontent, Charlie Weis insisted Notre Dame (5-4) is on the right path and he is the coach to lead the Fighting Irish out of their latest rut.
“I’m confident that the program is going to go where we all want it to go. That’s as honest as I can be,” Weis said Tuesday. “Because I think we have pretty good players. When you have pretty good players, you have a chance to be pretty good.”
In one change for Saturday’s game against Navy (6-3), Weis will take over the play calling because offensive coordinator Mike Haywood will be attending a funeral for a family member in Houston on Thursday.
Weis gave Haywood the play-calling duties at the start of the season. Weis would not say if Haywood would go back to calling plays when he returns. “I want to give him his time,” Weis said.
Etc.
• Nebraska linebacker Cody Glenn was suspended indefinitely from the team for violating team rules. Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini said Tuesday he would not elaborate on Glenn’s violation. Glenn is the Cornhuskers’ third-leading tackler, with 51 stops.
• Southern California redshirt freshman tailback Broderick Green said he is leaving the program to return to Little Rock, Ark., to be with his ailing grandmother. Green said he will officially transfer after the fall semester.
