WCHA women: Gophers 2, St. Cloud St. 1

Last update: October 31, 2008 - 11:46 PM

Gigi Marvin's third-period goal broke a tie as the No. 2 Gophers women's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State 2-1 on Friday night at Ridder Arena.

Alyssa Grogan made 25 saves for the Gophers (6-2-1, 5-1-1 WCHA), who led 1-0 entering the third period. But the Huskies (4-3-2, 1-3-1) tied it only eight seconds into the period on Sammy Nixon's power-play goal.

Marvin's fifth goal of the season -- at 12:38 of the third period -- broke the tie. Marvin is tied with Monique Lamoureux for the team lead in goals.

The Huskies had a power play for the final 1:49 -- pulling goalie Ashley Nixon for the 14 seconds for a 6-on-4 advantage -- but couldn't get the tying goal.

After a scoreless first period in which the Huskies outshot the Gophers 12-4, Emily West's goal 21 seconds into the second period gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead.

The Gophers outshot the Huskies 26-14 over the final two periods for a 30-26 advantage.

The Gophers were 0-for-9 on power-play opportunities, the Huskies 1-for-8. Ashley Nixon finished with 28 saves for St. Cloud State.
