About Charlie Sanders

High school: Played at Dudley High School — as did Gophers basketball great Lou Hudson — in Greensboro, N.C.

College: Recruited by Murray Warmath, he was an all-Big Ten tight end in 1967 when the Gophers shared the league title.

In the NFL: Taken in the third round of the 1968 NFL draft by Detroit. Played 10 seasons the Lions, catching 336 passes for 4,817 yards. Made seven Pro Bowls. Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

After football: was an assistant coach for the Lions for eight seasons and worked in the team's scouting department.

Family: Sanders is survived by his ex-wife, Georgianna, and their children Mia, Charese, Mary Jo, Georgianna, Charlie Jr., Tallisa, Wayne and Jordan. He was preceded in death by their daughter Nathalie. He is also survived by daughter Angela and son Lee.
