Freshman's overtime goal sends U past Purdue

Last update: October 11, 2008 - 8:39 AM

Freshman Tam Strahota's goal in the 109th minute lifted the Gophers soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Purdue at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday.

Strahota, who scored with 76 seconds remaining in overtime, helped the No. 24 Gophers improve to 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. The loss was the first in Big Ten play for No. 21 Purdue (9-4-2, 3-1-1).

Lindsey Schwartz took a corner kick and senior defender Krystle Kallman sent a header toward goal. Kallman's header was deflected to Tam Strahota, who beat Purdue keeper Jenny Bradfisch into the top right corner of the goal.

"Krystle knocked it down and I opened up on the near post like I'm supposed to. I was just there for the rebound," Strahota said.

Bradfisch made 12 saves for the Boilermakers.

The Gophers face No. 16 Illinois at home at 1 p.m. Sunday.
