Freshman Tam Strahota's goal in the 109th minute lifted the Gophers soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Purdue at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Friday.
Strahota, who scored with 76 seconds remaining in overtime, helped the No. 24 Gophers improve to 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. The loss was the first in Big Ten play for No. 21 Purdue (9-4-2, 3-1-1).
Lindsey Schwartz took a corner kick and senior defender Krystle Kallman sent a header toward goal. Kallman's header was deflected to Tam Strahota, who beat Purdue keeper Jenny Bradfisch into the top right corner of the goal.
"Krystle knocked it down and I opened up on the near post like I'm supposed to. I was just there for the rebound," Strahota said.
Bradfisch made 12 saves for the Boilermakers.
The Gophers face No. 16 Illinois at home at 1 p.m. Sunday.
U volleyball coastsLauren Gibbemeyer had 17 kills and Brook Dieter had 10 to lead the No. 12 Gophers volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 victory over Indiana at the Sports Pavilion on Friday.
The Gophers (15-2) are 5-0 in Big Ten Conference play for the second year in a row. They play host to Penn State (17-0, 5-0) at 6 tonight in a match that will be televised at 7 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
Gibbemeyer also had three blocks against Indiana while hitting .452, and Christine Tan had 15 digs for the Gophers. Erica Short had 18 kills for the Hoosiers (9-8, 1-4).
Etc.• The Gophers women's swimming and diving team opened the 2008-09 season with a 169-130 victory at Michigan.
