The Gophers women's basketball team added 25-year coaching veteran Gail Striegler to its coaching staff, coach Marlene Stollings announced Monday.

Striegler spent the past seven seasons at Long Island University Brooklyn, where she was the winningest coach in school women's basketball history but was fired in March after a third consecutive losing season.

"It's exciting to add such a highly accomplished coach and outstanding individual to our program," Stollings said in a statement. "Coach Gail brings with her a wealth of coaching experience, including a strong passion for the student-athletes and a tireless work ethic."

Said Striegler: "It is a tremendous honor. … Coach Marlene is one of the most dynamic head coaches in the country."

Striegler went 96-115 at LIU Brooklyn, going 62-31 in three seasons from 2009 to '12 but 25-64 from 2012-15. The Blackbirds went 9-21 each of the past two seasons.

From 1999 to 2007, Striegler was head coach at Central Florida, where she was a two-time Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year in her eight seasons. She also served as an assistant coach at Georgia State, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin.
