Colin Anderson, one of Minnesota's most decorated track and field throwers, died Monday at age 62 from cancer.

Anderson competed at former Golden Valley High School and became the first male in state history to surpass 60 feet in the shot put.

He won a Big Ten shot put title with the Gophers and earned a spot on the 1980 U.S. Olympic team that boycotted the Moscow Games. He later taught for 33 years at Elk River High School and helped coach football and track and field for 25 years with various high school programs.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne, and son Thomas. Lynne made the 1976 and 1980 U.S. Olympic teams in the discus and worked with Gophers throwers for more than 30 years as an assistant coach.

Thomas, a redshirt sophomore at Arizona State, was a two-time Minnesota shot put champion.
