Sean Weatherspoon bailed out a leaky Missouri defense with two late takeaways, and Jeremy Maclin had a 99-yard kickoff return and 45-yard punt return before leaving in the fourth quarter because of an ankle injury in a the Tigers’ 52-42 victory over No. 20 Illinois on Saturday night.
Juice Williams was 28-for-42 for 456 yards for the Illini, more than doubling his previous career best of 227 yards, and threw for a career-best fifth touchdown on the final play. Chris Duvalt and Will Judson each caught two touchdown passes, and Judson was wide open on a 65-yarder that cut the deficit to 45-35 with early in the fourth quarter.
Maclin, who finished with 206 all-purpose yards, lost his balance while running a pattern away from the play. He covered his face with a towel while being carted off the field from the Missouri sideline. He returned to the sidelines on crutches and still in uniform, his foot wrapped in ice.
Weatherspoon stopped one fourth-quarter drive with an interception at the Missouri 26, then he ripped the ball out of Daniel Dufrene’s hands after a reception and returned it 35 yards for touchdown and a 52-35 lead.
Illinois added one more meaningless score and the teams easily surpassed the total of last year’s track meet in the St. Louis, when Missouri held off an Illini rally and won 40-34.
The game sold out for the first time since the schools went to a neutral site this decade, with announced attendance of 66,441. The Edward Jones Dome was pretty much equally divided between Illinois and Mizzou fans.
No. 22 Penn State 66, Coastal Carolina 10: Evan Royster ran for three touchdowns and Derrick Williams had an 89-yard kickoff return for another score as Joe Paterno tied Bobby Bowden atop the career victories list for major college coaches in the 22nd-ranked Nittany Lions’ rout in State College, Pa.
Paterno, who opened his record 43rd season on the sideline, now has 373 career victories, just like Bowden, his good friend from Florida State. The Seminoles open next week.
“I haven’t even thought about it, and I’m not going to,” Paterno said about the milestone. “I can only say it so many times, it’s not a big deal to me.”
Instead, he was focused on the Nittany Lions’ play on the field — and it was hard to get a good barometer vs. the overwhelmed Chanticleers.
Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett had joked earlier in the week that he hoped his Championship Subdivision team wouldn’t be “obliterated” by halftime. The score at the half was 38-7.
“Welcome to Big Ten football,” Bennett said. “Woo!”
No. 13 Wisconsin 38, Akron 17: Bulldozing running back P.J. Hill rambled for 108 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, on his way to 210 yards and two scores for the day, and the Badgers held off the Zips in Madison, Wis.
Zach Brown added 87 yards and a touchdown and John Clay had 71 yards and a TD. But Hill, who has ran for 1,200 yards each of the past two years, remains the backbone of the Badgers offense.
Senior lefthander Allan Evridge, in his debut as starting quarterback for Wisconsin, was 7-for-10 for 75 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
“I think I did fairly well,” Evridge said. “I handed off the ball all right.”
California 38, Michigan State 31: Kevin Riley passed for 202 yards and two second-half touchdowns, and Shane Vereen broke an 81-yard scoring run with 4:21 left in the Golden Bears’ victory over the Spartans in Berkeley, Calif.
Jahvid Best rushed for 111 yards and a score, while tight end Cameron Morrah and fullback Will Ta’ufo’ou caught Riley’s TD passes in a solid debut for Cal’s brand-new collection of starting offensive skill players.
Brian Hoyer passed for 321 yards, hooking up with Mark Dell for nine catches and 202 yards, the fifth-biggest yardage total for a receiver in Michigan State history. Javon Ringer rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns for the Spartans, but they couldn’t catch up in a back-and-forth second half featuring 45 total points and 503 yards of total offense.
Northwestern 30, Syracuse 10: Tyrell Sutton showed his old form, running for 144 yards while C.J. Bacher threw three scoring passes to lead the Wildcats over the Orange in Evanston, Ill.
Brendan Smith intercepted a pass from Andrew Robinson and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown that made it 23-10 with 2:13 left in the quarter, and Bacher hit tight end Josh Rooks with a 2-yard scoring pass in the fourth that made it a 20-point game.
Indiana 31, Western Kentucky 13: Quarterback Kellen Lewis ran for touchdowns of 75 and 62 yards and threw for two more scores, leading the Hoosiers over the Hilltoppers in Bloomington, Ind. Lewis wasn’t even sure he would start until Tuesday after serving a four-month suspension over the spring and summer.
Iowa 46, Maine 3: Shonn Greene ran for 109 yards and a touchdown, freshman Jewel Hampton added two late TD runs and the Hawkeyes beat the Black Bears in Iowa City. Iowa rotated quarterbacks Jake Christensen and Ricky Stanzi, and while both played well at times, neither stood out.
