The Huskies (2-10 last year) start a new era, with Jerry Kill moving north from a rebuilt Southern Illinois program. He takes over from the retired Joe Novak.
Logic would suggest year two in Mike Dunbar's offense would mean a jump in offensive efficiency. But there are questions: How effective will the rebuilt offensive line be? Adam Weber only has a couple of truly experienced wideouts to throw to. The Huskies, hit hard by injuries last year, have an experienced defense. Nine starters return, including defensive end Larry English, last year's MAC MVP and a projected NFL first-round pick. Advantage: Gophers
Northern Illinois used to be a power running team. But Kill and offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover have opened things up. Kill hasn't decided on his starting QB, but his team will be a good test for Ted Roof's rebuilt Gophers defense. Three of four positions in the secondary feature new starters. Last year's Gophers ranked last in Division I-A in total defense. Advantage: Gophers
The Gophers return both kickers. Punter Justin Kucek is one of the best in the Big Ten. Kicker Joel Monroe has a strong leg but will have to prove he can be accurate on long field-goal attempts. Advantage: Gophers
Northern Illinois is healthy and experienced. The Huskies are also led by Kill, who led Southern Illinois to the semifinals in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). But the Gophers, with a bunch of new faces, are desperate to put last season's 1-11 behind them. Advantage: Even
The Gophers spent half their training camp preparing for this opponent, knowing the importance of breaking a 10-game losing streak. Whether they do will depend on how much Roof has improved the defense.
