St. Thomas thwarted a second-half Wisconsin-Eau Claire comeback and held on for a 22-17 nonconference victory Saturday in St. Paul.

The Tommies led 22-3 in the first two minutes of the second half, but the Blugolds scored in the final minute of the third quarter to pull within 22-10 going into the fourth quarter.

With 2:11 remaining in the game, Mark Munger's 3-yard touchdown pass and Parker LeMire's extra point pulled the Blugolds within 22-17. The Blugolds then recovered the onside kick at their own 41.

Munger, who completed 33 of 58 passes for 297 yards, completed two fourth-down passes to Chris Cummings to give the Blugolds, who were 2-8 last season, a first down at the Tommies 20-yard line with 45 seconds remaining. But on the next play, Sean Hamlin beat Cummings to a ball and picked off the pass, wrestling the ball away and holding on at the 3 with 36 seconds to play. St. Thomas then ran out the clock.

"It was great to see us come out of a tough situation at the end like that and find a way to win," said UST coach Glenn Caruso. "A close game like this pays much more dividends for us than a game like last year [a 52-7 Tommie win], when we had it all going our way."

Matt O'Connell passed for 183 yards and rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown. His 11-yard TD run early in the third quarter gave the Tommies a 22-3 lead.

• Northwestern (Minn.) 17, St. Olaf 16: Jacob Fletcher's 5-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Fettig with 1:20 to play gave the host Eagles a victory over the Oles. The Eagles, who trailed throughout the entire game, piled up 416 yards of offense. Chris Simon-Wallace rushed 12 times for 101 yards while Fletcher completed 20 of 31 passes for 229 yards and two scores.

St. Olaf quarterback Nate Penz was 24 of 35 for 197 yards and a touchdown. J.J. Strnad rushed for 105 yards and a TD.

Macalester 17, Carleton 14: Michael Abramson's 37-yard field goal as time ran out lifted the Scots to victory in St. Paul.

Abramson's kick capped a four-play, 46-yard drive for the Scots. The Scots led 14-0 midway through the third quarter, before Zach Creighton threw a 63-yard TD pass late in the third quarter and scored on an 11-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Creighton's TD came with 4:08 left in the game.

Zandy Stowell rushed for 112 yards and Samson Bialostok rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown and passed for 158 yards to lead the Scots.

Creighton passed for 161 yards and rushed for 56 for the Knights.

The game-ending field goal came 34 years to the day after Macalester snapped a then-NCAA record 50-game losing streak with a final-play field goal to beat Mount Senario 17-14.

Hamline 37, Minnesota-Morris 6: Tim Bona passed for three touchdowns in the first half and Austin Duncan rushed for 150 of the 271 rushing yards amassed by the host Pipers.

Wartburg 40, Augsburg 3: Wartburg built a 27-3 halftime lead, sacked Augsburg's Ayrton Scott five times and limited the Auggies to 184 yards of offense.Wartburg QB Logan Schrader completed 14 of 20 passes for 215 yards. Wide receiver Robbie Anstoetter caught two TD passes, including one on an option pass from fellow receiver Taylor Jacobsmeier.

Gustavus 40, Crown 17: Mitch Hendricks threw five touchdown passes and rushed for a touchdown in leading the Gusties past the Storm in St. Peter, Minn.

Hendricks, who completed 23 of 28 passes for 260 yards, threw four scoring passes in the first half as the Gusties built a 30-7 halftime lead.

Matt Boyce caught nine passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns for the Gusties.

Concordia (Moorhead) 40, Jamestown 13: Griffin Neal passed for 224 yards and a touchdown and rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Cobbers to a nonconference victory over the host Jimmies.

Alex McLean rushed for 79 yards to lead the Cobbers, who accumulated 291 rushing yards and had 30 first downs.

St. John's 27, Wisconsin-River Falls 8: Sam Sura rushed for 168 yards and three TDs, leading the Johnnies to the nonconference victory over the Falcons. Sura rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Johnnies built a 24-0 lead.

The Johnnies rushed for 309 yards and held the ball for more than 44 minutes.
