Minnesota Scene: Gophers get commitment from Virginia point guard Kevin Dorsey

Four-star point guard Kevin Dorsey revealed that he will play for the Gophers.

Dorsey, ranked as the 84th-best recruit in the nation by Rivals, confirmed the news by text message. It was first reported by Scout.com.

The Gophers saw Dorsey in Washington this weekend — the first of three evaluation periods allowed by the NCAA in July — where he played in a camp held by Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson.

The commitment from Dorsey, who is 5-11 and played at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Va., marks a big early victory for coach Richard Pitino in his first “normal” recruiting class. The second-year head coach had to pull in a handful of newcomers for last season after being hired in April. The staff then had only about seven months to recruit 2014 prospects before the first signing period last year.

Dorsey seems to be a perfect fit for Pitino’s free-moving, pick-and-roll offense and pressure defense. Current No. 1 point guard DeAndre Mathieu will use his final year of eligibility in the coming season.

Dorsey visited Minnesota’s campus in late June. Recently he had told reporters that his top three schools included Big Ten teams Nebraska and Maryland, schools he also visited.

• Olivia Herrick birdied the final two holes, shooting a 3-under-par 69 and winning the Minnesota Women’s Public Golf Association State Public Links Championship at Monticello Country Club. She beat Sarah Burnham by three strokes, finishing with a two-round total of 136. Herrick started her Sunday round with 13 consecutive pars. She won the Public Links Championship for the third time.

• The St. Paul Saints overcame 12 walks issued by their pitchers, beating Kansas City 11-7 at Midway Stadium. The 12 walks fell one short of the club record. Henry Wrigley went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Saints, who had 15 hits.
