Gophers senior John Simons earned first-team All-America honors with a seventh place in the 1,500-meter run Saturday at the NCAA men’s track and field meet in Eugene, Ore.

Simons, who placed 10th in the race in 2013, finished in 3 minutes, 40.57 seconds, just off his personal best of 3:40.56 set in May at the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark.

Only a half-second separated the fifth- through ninth-place runners. Oregon’s Mac Fleet repeated as national champion, winning in 3:39.09, .04 ahead of Arizona’s Lawi Lalang.

All five Gophers who qualified for the NCAA meet earned All-America status. Simons joined Wally Ellenson (high jump), Dominique Howard (discus), Zach Siegmeier (pole vault) and Jon Lehman (hammer throw).

Chaska native Andy Bisek and Jordan Holm of Minneapolis won their weight classes Friday at the U.S. Greco-Roman world team trials in Daytona Beach, Fla., earning places on the American team that will wrestle at September’s world championships in Uzbekistan.

Bisek swept his best-of-three series against Jon Anderson 9-1 and 5-0 in the 75-kilogram class to make his third world team. Holm swept Zach Nielsen of Zimmerman 9-1 and 8-0 at 85 kilograms, making the team for the second time.

Both wrestlers compete for the Minnesota Storm.

North Star Grand Prix

Gillian Carleton won the women’s division and Tom Devriendt claimed the men’s title at the Menomonie Road Race, the 83.2-mile fifth stage of the North Star Grand Prix.

Carleton and Lizzie Williams gave the Vanderkitten team a 1-3 finish. Leah Kirchmann of Team Optum was second. Carmen Small (Specialized-lululemon) retained her overall lead.

Fabio Calabria of Horizon Organic/Einstein Bros. was second among the men and Eric Marcotte of Team SmartStop was third. Ryan Anderson of Team Optum retained the overall lead.

Canterbury Park officials canceled the Saturday racing program following the sixth race of a scheduled 13-race card because of unsafe weather and track conditions.

•The Saints’ game at Winnipeg was suspended, following a two-hour delay, because of rain in the bottom of the third inning with the Goldeyes ahead 1-0. The teams will finish the suspended game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by the regularly scheduled game.
