The Gophers lost 4-3 to Indiana on Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten men’s tennis tournament in East Lansing, Mich.

The outcome came down to No. 6 singles. With the match tied 3-3, Matthew McCoy of the 10th-seeded Hoosiers beat Juan Pablo Ramirez, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.

Minnesota’s points came from Leandro Toledo at first singles and Jack Hamburg at third singles — both rallied for three-set wins — and Eric Frueh, who won in straight sets at fifth singles.

The Gophers (11-13) were the seventh seed.

In the women’s tennis conference meet in Evanston, Ill., the Gophers edged Wisconsin 4-3 on Julia Courter’s 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win over Lauren Burich at No. 3 singles.

Maja Vujic and Paula Rincon Otero of sixth-seeded Minnesota (17-8) won in straight sets at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, and the Gophers also won two of three doubles matches for a point.

The Gophers will play third-seeded Ohio State at 2 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Big test for U golfers

The Gophers will compete in the three-day Big Ten women’s golf tournament starting Friday in French Lick, Ind.

Minnesota is 86-44-3 overall this season in head-to-head competition, including 12-10 against conference teams. The Gophers won their first tournament — Brigham Young’s Entrada Classic — in six years this March and posted four of the top eight team scores in tournaments in program history.

Junior Carmen Laguna tied for ninth in last year’s conference meet while junior Anna Laorr tied for 26th.

Etc.

• The Gophers baseball team will play its first night game at the new Siebert Field at 6:35 p.m. Friday. A lighting ceremony will take place before the game against Penn State.

• Forward Cullen Hurley, of Eagan, signed with Wisconsin. He played high school hockey at Holy Angels but for the past two seasons was with Muskegon of the USHL.

• Defensemen Jack Glover of Golden Valley and Ryan Collins of Bloomington — both Gophers recruits — each had an assist as the U.S. team beat Slovakia 6-2 Thursday in the Under-18 IIHF World Championship in Lappeenranta, Finland, to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

• Minnesota United FC will be one of the eight NASL teams competing in the 101st Lamar Hunt U.S. Open. United FC and the other NASL will enter in the third round, which will start May 28.
