Former Gopher Lindsey Berg was named to the U.S. women's volleyball team that will compete at the Summer Olympics next month in Beijing.
Berg, a setter, had 5,913 assists at Minnesota from 1998 to 2001, putting her third in Gophers history and in the Big Ten. She is also second on the Gophers career list in service aces with 283 and ninth in digs with 1,047.
Ruud pitches Saints past ExplorersCharlie Ruud pitched eight strong innings, and Brent Krause went 3-for-3 with a solo homer to lead the Saints to a 4-0 victory over the Sioux City Explorers on Wednesday afternoon at Midway Stadium.
Ruud (10-1) gave up four hits and struck out a season-high seven batters to become the first 10-game winner in the American Association.
Tony Mansolino and Pichi Balet added two hits apiece for the Saints (7-8). Nick McCoola had two hits for Sioux City (8-7).

• Andrew Paulson of White Bear Lake defeated Chan Kim of Chandler, Ariz., 3 and 2 in the round of 64 at the U.S. Public Links Golf Championship in Aurora, Colo.
• The Gophers' Liz Roehrig will compete in the heptathlon for Team USA against Germany in the Thorpe Cup Aug. 2-3 in Manhattan, Kan. Roehrig, who will be a senior next spring, was fifth in the Olympic Trials.
• Ben Blankenship, a two-time Class 2A state champion in the 1,600-meter run for Stillwater, has transferred to Minnesota after one year at Mississippi State. He is eligible to compete in cross-country and track
