Minnesota Scene: Two U runners win Big Ten indoor titles

  • Updated: March 1, 2014 - 10:08 PM

Two runners for the Gophers — John Simons in the men’s mile and Alena Brooks in the women’s 600 — won individual titles in the Big Ten indoor track and field championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Both are seniors, but their victories had little in common. Simons won a tactical, slow-paced race. Brooks set a conference record.

Simons’ time was 4 minutes, 15.73 — almost 12 seconds slower than what he ran in the preliminaries. Marcus Paulson, another Gopher, was sixth (4:17.51) in the finals.

Jon Lehman of the Gophers took second in the weight throw. He threw 74-5 on his second-to-last attempt in the finals. Teammate Justin Barber took eighth (66-5).

Goaner Deng was third in the 800 (1:50.44). Wally Ellenson, who recently left the men’s basketball team to focus on the high jump, placed fourth. He cleared 6-11½ on his third try. Nate Roese was sixth in the 600 (1:17.95). Minnesota’s 4x400 relay took eighth (3:11.91).

Wisconsin, with four individual champions, repeated as the team champion with 122.5 points. Nebraska was second with 110. The Gophers were sixth with 57.

In the women’s conference meet, Brooks, the top seed, won the 600 in 1:26.73, but Minnesota’s best event was a much longer race.

Molly Kayfes, Laura Docherty and Liz Berkholtz were second, third and fifth in the 5,000, respectively. Michigan’s Erin Finn won the race by almost 30 seconds over Kayfes (16:21.06).

Brooks also ran on the Gophers’ 4x400 relay (3:36.67), which placed third.

Devin Stanford of the Gophers took fourth place in the weight throw with a toss of 63-5½. Becca Dyson was seventh in the mile (4:46.94).

Penn State, which won four individual titles and one relay, won the women’s title with 114.5 points, Michigan was second with 104, Nebraska third with 92. The Gophers took fourth with 64.5 points.

U baseball splits

The Gophers edged Louisiana Tech 4-2 in 10 innings on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader in Ruston, La., but lost the second game 3-2.

Third baseman Mark Tatera’s double in the top of the 10th of the opener drove in the two tiebreaking runs. Leadoff hitter Connor Schaefbauer was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Gophers.

Tatera’s two-run homer in the seventh tied the second game at 2-2. But the Bulldogs hit a homer in their next at-bat.

Top four streak alive

Moving up two places on the final day, the Gophers finished fourth with 378 points in the Big Ten men’s swimming and diving championships on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich. They have finished fourth or better since 1989, a 26-year streak.

Derek Toomey of the Gophers was second in the 100-yard freestyle (42.68), Manny Pollard third in platform diving (394), C.J. Smith fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (14:56.18). The Gophers’ 400-freestyle relay also took fourth.

Etc.

• The Gophers scored a season-high in beat Iowa State 197.250 to 193.725 in women’s gymnastics at the Sports Pavilion. Lindsay Mable won the all-around with a score of 39.625, a school record. The No. 12-ranked Gophers are 14-1.

• The Gophers won 5-2 over Wisconsin in men’s tennis at the Baseline Tennis Center.
