Gophers at a glance: The four-game winning streak Minnesota (17-10, 6-7) rode into Thursday’s lopsided, 63-42 loss to No. 21 Purdue is gone. But coach Pam Borton said the team’s momentum and confidence shouldn’t go with it. The shorthanded Gophers, who played with just seven players for the second consecutive game, had one of their worst offensive performances against the Boilermakers. They shot just 26.8 percent from the floor with two of their best shooters, starters Rachel Banham and Kayla Hirt, combining to go 2-25. … Still, Borton was quick to point out the Gophers control their own destiny and remain in a strong position to advance to the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

Spartans at a glance: No. 23 Michigan State (18-8, 10-3) is tied for second in the Big Ten, one game behind Penn State, following back-to-back wins last week against Ohio State and Wisconsin. In the Spartans’ 76-66 win in Madison on Thursday, six players scored in double figures, led by Becca Mills’ 15 points. Tori Jankowska had 14 points, seven assists and five steals. … The Spartans have three players averaging double digits in scoring and have a league-high six players who’ve recorded double-doubles. Their three freshman account for 42 percent of the scoring. … That depth was on full display when the Spartans traveled to Williams Arena on Jan. 4 and won 81-56.
