Western Michigan upsets Michigan in OT

• WESTERN MICHIGAN 3, MICHIGAN 2 (OT): Josh Pitt’s power-play goal with 19 seconds left in overtime gave the Broncos (8-8-3) a victory in the second outdoor game of the Great Lake Invitational at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Wolverines, 10-3-2 and rated No. 3 in the most recent USCHO.com national poll, led 1-0 on J.T. Compher’s shorthanded goal early in the second period. Shane Berschbach and Will Kessel scored later in the period for Western Michigan, which will play Michigan Tech on Saturday in the championship game. Travis Lynch’s goal for Michigan at 5:24 of the third tied the score at 2-all.

• MICHIGAN TECH 2, MICHIGAN STATE 2 (OT), tie: Jake Hildebrand stopped 41 shots, 19 in the second period, to help the Spartans (5-9-2) tie the Huskies (6-9-6) in the first game of the Great Lakes Invitational. Michigan State scored twice early in the third period to take a 2-1 lead, but Michigan Tech’s Alex Petan tied the score at 8:13 with his 10th goal of the season. The Huskies won a shootout 2-1 to advance to Saturday’s title game.

• PENN STATE 3, ROBERT MORRIS 2: Despite getting 62 shots on goal, the Nittany Lions (4-9-1) needed two unanswered third-period goals — including Eric Scheid’s winner with 1:40 left — to beat the visiting Colonials (2-11-2).

• WISCONSIN 5, ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE 0: Keegan Meuer’s unassisted goal at 6:14 of the opening period proved to be the winner as the No. 14 Badgers (9-5-1) routed the Chargers (1-18-0) at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin outshot the visitors 55-9. Michael Mersch had the final goal for the Badgers and a game-high eight shots. Morgan Zulinick and Minnesotans Grant Besse and Tyler Barnes had the other goals.
