FCS football playoffs: NDSU wins; SDSU loses

Brock Jensen threw a touchdown and had a long run for another in the second half as two-time defending national champion North Dakota State pulled away from Furman to win 38-7 in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs Saturday in Fargo, N.D.

NDSU (12-0) scored three TDs in the third quarter. Sam Ojuri had a short run, Jensen hit Andrew Bonnett for 7 yards, and Reese Hannon returned an interception 61 yards to make it 31-7.

Jensen wrapped it up with a 53-yard scoring run.

The Paladins (8-6) hung with the Bison early. After Jensen opened the scoring with a 52-yard TD pass to Zach Vraa, Furman answered with a 75-yard drive, capped by Marcus Anderson’s 1-yard run.

North Dakota next will play Coastal Carolina on Friday or Saturday.

Eastern Washington 41, South Dakota State 17: It was the coldest game ever at Eastern Washington, but quarterback Vernon Adams was hot as he led the Eagles (11-2) past the Jackrabbits (9-5) in Cheney, Wash.

Despite a temperature of 19 degrees at kickoff, Adams threw five touchdown passes. Quincy Forte rushed for 202 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown, and Cooper Kupp caught two touchdown passes, giving him an FCS-record of 20 this season.

SDSU’s Zach Zenner crossed the 2,000-yard mark for the second consecutive season, finishing the year with 2,015 after tallying 71 yards on 21 carries.
