Award for Gagliardi

John Gagliardi, the former St. John's University coach, will receive the Contributions to College Football Award on Thursday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., from the National College Football Awards Association.

Among previous winners were Tom Osborne (2005), Bobby Bowden (2008) and Ara Parseghian (2012).

"It is hard to believe I am even mentioned with the previous nominees," Gagliardi said. "I have obviously out-punted my coverage and am completely out of my league.

"If I contributed anything to football perhaps it is that we were successful with a very different approach to coaching. We showed that we could win with short practices and no full-go contact, as well as other out-of-the-box tactics."

Gagliardi's award will be presented to him during an football awards show starting at 6 p.m. Thursday on ESPN.
