The University of North Dakota fired football coach Chris Mussman after a 3-8 season, including a 2-6 mark in the Big Sky Conference.

UND athletic director Brian Faison says the two met Monday and Mussman was immediately relieved of his duties. Mussman coached six seasons with UND and had an overall 31-34 record.

He joined the coaching staff as the offensive line coach in 1999, became offensive coordinator in 2001 and took over as the head coach before the 2008 season.

Before arriving in Grand Forks, Mussman spent eight seasons at Minnesota State Mankato.

Gophers, St. Cloud State 1-2

The Gophers men’s hockey team remained at No. 1 in the latest United States College Hockey Online poll, with St. Cloud State moving up to No. 2.

The Gophers women’s team remained at No. 1 despite the end of its record 62-game winning streak.

Horse racing meets set

Canterbury Park received approval Monday from the Minnesota Racing Commission to conduct a 69-day horse racing season in 2014, from May 16 to Sept. 13.

The meet is the same length as in 2013 and will include both thoroughbred and quarter horse racing, with eight to 15 races per day. Post times will remain at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

The MRC also approved a 57-day harness racing season for Running Aces Harness Park, running May 24-Aug. 30.
