MIAC roundup: Tommies comeback forges tie for second

The St. Thomas football team rallied from an early 13-point deficit for a 34-20 MIAC victory over Concordia (Moorhead) on Saturday in St. Paul.

The victory moved the Tommies (7-2, 5-2 MIAC), ranked No. 18 in the d3football.com poll, into a three-way tie for second place — with the Cobbers and St. John’s — in the MIAC standings.

Griffin Neal threw a TD pass and rushed for a TD in the first seven minutes as the No. 21 Cobbers (7-2, 5-2) took a 13-0 lead.

The Tommies rallied to take a 27-20 halftime lead and then held the Cobbers scoreless in the second half.

Jack Kaiser rushed for 134 yards and three TDs for the Tommies, who close out their regular season at St. Olaf next Saturday.

Neal rushed for two TDs and passed for a TD for the Cobbers, who play host to Gustavus next Saturday.

Bethel 47, St. Olaf 0: Brandon Marquardt rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns and Erik Peterson passed for 266 yards and two TDs to lead the host Royals past the Oles.

The Royals (9-0, 7-0 MIAC), ranked No. 5 in the d3football.com poll, built a 33-0 halftime lead.

The Royals, ranked No. 2 in the Division III West Region, close out the regular season next Saturday at St. John’s.

Gustavus 34, Carleton 19: Jeffrey Dubose rushed for 264 yards and four TDs to lead the host Gusties (6-3, 4-3) past the Knights.

Dubose scored on runs of 59, 28 and 17 and 20 yards.

St. John’s 20, Hamline 14: Connor Bruns threw two TD passes to help the host Johnnies (7-2, 5-2) rally for a victory.

Austin Duncan rushed for 154 yards to lead the Pipers (2-7, 1-7), who led 14-10 at halftime.

Augsburg 34, Macalester 16: Ayrton Scott passed for 313 yards and two TDs to lead the host Auggies to a nonconference victory.
